It's that time again. Hugh Hewitt is doing his weekend symposium.
Weekend Symposium 3: How deep a hole have John Kerry, Mary Beth Cahill and the Edwards dug for themselves? How lasting the damage?
My Thoughts (something akin to a verbal aneurism)
I almost missed it. Had I not been watching the debate with Mrs. Hamilton's Pamphlets, I probably wouldn't have realized how big a gaffe it was. As soon as the Senator said it my wife said "I can't believe he just did that!".
Surprised, I asked the lovely and enchanting Mrs. Hamilton's Pamphlets what he said that bothered her so. I should have immediately recognized the Protective Mother look in her eye and tone in her voice. I didn't. Sometimes I'm a little slow. She turns to me and says, "you didn't hear what he just did?" Sheepishly I said, "Uh, no..." Patiently my wife explains to me, "He just used Vice President Cheney's daughter against her father and the President". "Really?", I said. "I thought it was kinda classless to bring her up again after the VP debate, but I don't see the big deal." "Oh, its a big deal", she said. "He just said in so many words that if the Cheney's love their daughter but go along with the President's policies, then they are really lying about loving their daughter or they are lying about supporting the President. He basically called the Cheney's two faced liars and questioned whether they love their daughter."
My response, "Wow! You got all that out of that little thing he just said?" "That's exactly what he meant", she replied. Just after the debate my Mother-in-Law stopped by the house (I actually LIKE my Mother-in-Law, so this wasn't a bad thing) and she had pretty much the same reaction and that same scary Protective Mother look in her eye (I see where my wife gets that from now).
Then, I see the reaction of the Press and they're livid. Unbelieveable! This thing is snowballing out of control.
I come to work the next day and check the online news (instant polls are all garbage, as usual) but they are all over on the Mary Cheney Comment. The Blogs are ON FIRE over it. I still feel like I'm missing something... I see Lynne Cheney's comments. The fog is begining to lift. Then the Edwards' chime in. OUCH! The remaining wisps are blown away. I GET IT!!!
The Kerry/Edwards campaign was trying to pry away some base from the President on the homophobic far right by bringing Mary Cheney into the campaign as an issue. At first, I saw it as more pandering and sleaze from the challengers and pretty much ignored it from the minute the Senator said it.
The problem for Kerry/Edwards is that everyone else (with the possible exception of me for the longest time) saw it the way my wife did. You just attacked somebody's kid. Batten down the hatches! Stand by for heavy rolls!
How deep is the hole? Before the debate I would guess that the LGBT community was pretty well resigned to voting for the Dems, but after I'm thinking they'll be backing the President if for no other reason than to vote against John Kerry. Interestingly, the LGBT (a new term/acronym I learned from this whole debacle) wields a great deal of influence in say... Hollywood, TV, Journalism, Writing, the Arts, etc. How could the Democrats lose that? They very well might have.
Is it really possible that one of the most overtly religious and conspicuously Christian Presidents in recent history will garner a massive ground swell of support from the gay community? Oh, the irony....
How deep is the hole? Have Senators Kerry and Edwards applied to the Peking bar association yet? Yup, its that deep.
How lasting the damage? I'm guessing in the neighborhood of, oh, about four years...
